Wilfred Cyr was born in Amesbury, Massachusetts in 1889, where he lived all his life. Physically handicapped with a form of partial paralysis, he was only able to move his brush holding hand across the easel to paint by pushing his painting hand with his other wrist. His brother Cyril, also an artist, had the same inherited handicap, but they both were very capable instructors in their own art studio. One of their students was Al Capp the famous American cartoonist and humorist best known for the comic strip Li’l Abner. Al Cap is said to have been heavily influenced by Cyr’s comic strips "Cabin Boy", "Exploits of Eve", and others. In addition to running a successful school for cartoonists, Cyr was a very accomplished and fine artist who produced many paintings throughout his career. Wilfred Cyr created many paintings of local scenes later in his life. This painting is an extremely well done and totally original fall landscape painting depicting a scene along the Merrimack River, most probably in Amesbury or Merrimack, MA. Cyr's palette of fall colors are stunning and the painting has a warm and inviting glow about it. The painting is signed on the front “W. R. Cyr”, and is in its original and very substantial frame. There is a label on the reverse that reads: "Joseph E. Trombla, Funeral Director, Amesbury, MA Art Dept." indicating that it originated or was framed in Amesbury, MA. The size of the art is 12” x 16" and framed it is 18” x 22".
