Charles T. Stepule was a long-time resident of Hartford, Connecticut.  He was born in Wallingford, Connecticut in 1911 to
Charles and Mary Yokim Stepule.  He studied at the National Academy of Design, the Connecticut League of Art Students, the
New York Art Students League and in various studios in England, France, Spain and Italy.  For many years he also taught at the
East Hartford, Connecticut Art League. During World War II, he served in the Army.
Stepule was a renowned artist and was known for his love of New England scenes, especially for his harbor paintings of
Gloucester and Rockport, Massachusetts.  In 1958, he established the Charles T. Stepule Gallery, the oldest gallery on Bearskin
Neck, in Rockport, MA.   He had a very long and very successful career in Rockport with his gallery and painted there and in the
area for almost 70 years.  He is a very well listed and highly collected artist whose work has appeared in numerous galleries,
museums and at auction.
This is magnificent, vintage, oil on canvas painting, done in the classic impressionist style and is titled “Spring in Topsfield,
MA”.  The painting itself measures a large 24 by 36 inches.  It is a most unusual and interesting Stepule painting in that it
departs from the artist’s known and conventional subject matter as he was known primarily as a painter of New England coastal
and nautical scenes.  It is contained in the original distressed wormwood frame, from which it has never been removed.  Overall
it is in excellent, untouched, original condition!
Charles Stepule passed away on November 3rd, 2006 in Gloucester, MA.
