Leonard Charles Kazor was born July 22, 1917 in St. Clair County, Michigan, a son of Frank Bernard Kazor and Rose Amanda Seigler. Leonard Kazor was a mid-century California modernist painter who worked in the Pasadena area. He attended the Pasadena Art Institute 1949-51 and worked as an architect and painter. He is best known to for his modernist and figural abstracts, figural nudes, plein air modernist landscapes, and expressionist cityscape pieces. He seemed to prefer to date and number his paintings and often mentioned the actual day, time, and location the work was executed on a memo on the reverse of the piece. Many of his works ended up at a Long Beach California flea market a few years after he passed away and were sold out of the back of a truck. There were reported to be hundreds of his works in this one sale alone. Most of his work is signed, "L. Kazor". Leonard Kazor passed away February 12, 2000 in Pasadena, CA. Source: Edan Hughes, "Artists in California, 1786-1940." See smaller paintings sold at Skinner, Boston Sale 5/15/09, lot #513. Signed L. Kazor 1953 and numbered #155 on front.
