The history of Rollstone Hill and the Boulder as a landmark is deep-rooted and ancient.  This was Fitchburg’s first destination
well before the concept of a destination was even thought about.  Native Americans and early settlers used the boulder on top
of Rollstone Hill as a landmark and a gathering site during their travels as far back as the early 1800s.  Later curious hikers
climbed Rollstone Hill simply to see this impressive ice age relic. Thousands have celebrated special events, took pleasure in
a picnic lunch, and enjoyed the fresh air and commanding views in its presence.  Professors and students of science often
hiked the mountain to study the geology and mineralogy of the site, while local poets wrote sentimental and mesmerizing
lines of its allure.

So, in reality, I’m not proposing anything new here as this Rock Walk has been going on for centuries, and continues to this
day.  Rollstone Hill has seen the footsteps of thousands upon thousands of people, it has celebrated special events of all
kinds with its visitors, yet it has never been less than a welcoming host to anyone who has made the effort to visit.  The
landscape of Rollstone Hill combined with its impressive historical connections to our city, is a story waiting to be told, it is
without question a landscape with an extraordinary history.  What I am promoting by attempting to get this Rock Walk
established is creating a permanent way of protecting, preserving, and managing a unique landscape, a landscape that has a
wealth of historic, scenic, natural, educational, and cultural importance in order to make it more available and accessible for
everyone to enjoy, now and for future generations to come.
