This is a rarely seen 1901 Iver Johnson Model 69, Women's Roadster, with a 24" frame, in "as found" condition. Serial # 87320 is
stamped under the bottom bracket. 1901 was the first year Iver Johnson used its familiar "Shield" style badge which is still intact and
untouched. The bike has nicely preserved black paint with single hairline pin stripping and most all of the nickel plated parts are still
in fairly decent shape considering its age.
The roadster is resting on a set of painted wood "Lobdell" wheels with a 36 spoke barrel hub in the rear and a 32 spoke barrel hub
up front, its original wood rear mudguard is perfectly attached. Tires are present, but disintegrated. The bike retains its original Iver
Johnson seat post, handlebar stem, and handlebars with cork grips. The chainring is the original "snowflake" style with 22 teeth,
pedal arms are 6 1/2", and the the saddle is a Troxel and not original to the bike. The original pedal set is still on the bike and the
catalog states they are, or should be, "Star, Women's combination, manufactured by the Bridgeport Gun Implement Company".
One item of particular interest to me is the chainguard. The guard is now metal, unlike the previous years wood, and of an
interesting but simple design. Also the attachments and hardware used for the skirt guard are unique to the year. All things
considered, this is a fairly nice example of a transitional year Iver Johnson Cycle, that still retains features of their late 1800's bikes,
yet begins to introduce some fairly new and improved refinements. Another interesting feature is the double arched crown on the
fork. It is not shown in the 1901 catalog, but is used on the higher grade 1900 bikes.
