| So, I started to think, a naturally scenic, historically important, and culturally significant “Walk”, can really be an important asset to a community. Not only can it conserve and protect the landscape that defines the character of a city, it can also enhance tourism, economic development, and quality of life. I believe Fitchburg has the potential to offer a walk that has more than its share of those qualities, and if developed properly, can be one of the best in the entire state ! What would set my proposed walk apart from others is not the fact that it would have a few, or some, of the important qualities that make this type of attraction work, but the fact that it has ALL of the right qualities to make it exceptionally unique! It has an extraordinary landscape, enormous historical importance, incredible educational potential, impressive natural beauty and scenic vistas, and the potential to integrate the cultural aspects of music, art, dance, drama, and literature within the site. It is without question, a landscape eager to tell its story. The idea of a Fitchburg “ Walk” was beginning to take shape. Like Williamstown, I do believe that this walk could become a destination for scores of people in the region, and in some way be a small piece in the economic development puzzle. Because the walk would start and end in the Upper Common, people might find it interesting to combine the hike with a visit to the Art Museum, the Historical Society, the Boulder Café, the City Hall Café, Debonis and Davin Florist, the Ambience Boutique, or the Boulder Art Gallery. |
